Midwest Collegiate Sailing Rankings - Oct. 31 Results and Revisions

Since our first attempt at a ranking of MCSA teams in early October, more regattas have been held and we have made tweaks to the ranking process. The first thing we realized is that regatta scores appear to change and show some variablility among the sources reporting them. In addition, some regatta scores are not publically posted, even weeks after the regatta was held. To be consistant, we will be primarily using those scores posted on the TechScore website http://scores.collegesailing.info/. This appears to be the only site where scores are posted and updated in a timely manner.
Below represent updated SailMichigan rankings for MCSA sailing teams who have completed at least 3 of 12 evaluated regattas for Fall 2011. The evaluated MCSA regattas are: Boiler Cup, Fall Fury, Acton Up, Davis Cup, Sloop Championship, Cedarfest*, Cary-Price Intersectional, Pere Marquette, Chief Illiniwek*, Buckeye Invitational, Boudeman Cup, and the Emma Biagoni Memorial (Hope College). All results were obtained from TechScore and all were final results, except for Cedarfest and Chief Illiniwek, which were provisional scores, and the Boudeman Cup (scores posted on the MCSA website). The rankings (and values) were determined as an average of a weighted regatta performance. The weighting formula takes into consideration the breath of the field in a regatta, such that first place finishes in a 10 boat field are given a two-fold better value than first place finishes in a 5 boat field. The field is determined by the number of schools participating, not the number of individual teams.

Other parameters/guidelines used in the ranking process:
  • Only MCSA in-conference regattas or MCSA-hosted intersectionals were evaluated
  • In-conferences regattas were considered regardless of boat used (FJ, 420, Flying Scot)
  • Round robin, Single-handed, Men's only or Women's only regattas were excluded
  • Best available scores from Collegesailing.info (TechScore) were used
  • Regatta performance was evaluated by final regatta ranking not individual regatta point scores
  • Competition field was determined by the number of schools represented, not actual number of teams
  • Only the highest performing team, from schools with multiple teams participating in a regatta, was considered in rankings
  • Teams from distinct university branch campuses were treated as separate univeristies (i.e. Univ of Illinois-Chicago is distinct from University of Illinois)
  • Only teams participating in a minimm of 3 evaluated regattas were eligible for ranking

  1. This ranking system should absolutely consider out of conference regattas as worth more points. Well qualified teams get buried in this system because they send their best teams out east every weekend.
